About Me...

Welcome to MarcusShepard.com, my official homepage. I am Dr. Marcus C. Shepard,  a tenured professor who studies communication, identity and diversity as they are heard within soul music and discussed by multiracial communities.

A doctoral graduate of USC's Annenberg School of Communication & Journalism with a doctorate in Communication, I also graduated from Northwestern University with a B.A. in Communication where I also helped co-found the first soul and gospel a cappella group Soul4Real. At Northwestern, I merged my love for singing soul music with my academic interests and began studying how neo-soul music intersects with identity. My research on neo-soul has been featured on several websites and on UnSung.

Additionally, my interests have taken me into the realm of interpersonal communication, where I've authored the textbook "Midnight Musings: Interpersonal Communication & Social Media" and coined the phrase "amienships," to identify a new interpersonal relationship that has evolved due to social media. Through my research and expertise in interpersonal communication, I have also become a certified relationship coach and will be launching my services July 2022.
